Out With It!
Okay, I've discovered there are other people out there affected by this problem so I have to ask. How many of you out there just can't type the word "ratio" without typing "ration" first. Come on, don't be shy, there have to be others out there. I know a couple of people at work who have this problem, and now I know Jeremy Parish's got it too. So tell me, can you type "ration"?

Dooh! I have this problem too! I think its because we usually type a lot of words that end with "ion", so everytime you encounter a word ending with "io" your reflexes take over.
I have a feeling this will be more common with people who type without looking at the keyboard.

Well I type without looking at the keyboard (its called touch typing me thinks). You might be right with that theory. Looking up "ratio ration typo" on the goog brings up nearly 18000 results. And this is just the people who discovered the typo! Yet, I can find no mention of this or anything related on any web sites. Weird.

Me too - also with radio, patio and Horatio (although I don't type that too often).
Strange. It never happens to me with "radio". I can't remember the last time I typed patio or Horatio.

Hmm...interesting theory. But I use my thumb for the space bar and the other fingers for the letter keys so I don't see how that happens. Maybe I could get a job figuring out why this happens :) In the process, maybe I'll also finally figure out how thermacol is made :)

I was doing some experiments on this issue and noted that this doesnt happen when I type radio, I think the key behind this is "Tion" and not just "Ion". You have a lot of words ending with "tion" (inspiration, education.. you get the pic) and we use them very often,
so when you type ratio, you end up with ration but you dont get radion when you type radio!

Another interesting hypothesis. Me thinks you may have too much time on your hands :) Might be right though.

OMIGOSH! Look who has gotten so social! Nice. How was the Thai adventure?
Heh :) I still can't believe nobody left a comment on the previous, more thought out (at least by my standards!) post. Frivolty wins again.
The Thai adventure was a mixed bag. Had some sort of fried rice with fresh prawns (fresh prawns in Delhi! Horrors!). That was nice. Some sort of chicken green curry thing. Hated that. A couple of bottles of good lager made it worth my while though. Wasn't as spicy as I imaged it'd be. You need to show me the Thai place you tried sometime.

I thought your previous post rocked, I had so much to say! I even typed out a lengthy post but felt I was rambling more than anything, so decided to wait a while before I had more clarity on what I wanted to say and more importanty how I wanted to phrase it.

Andy: Interesting that you should make the point about rambling thoughts. I'd been thinking about this issue for a long time and putting my thoughts together took me a while too. Its very hard to look at the issue objectively so one ends up with a very skewed perspective indeed. Glad somebody took the time to read it though :)
